Photos of 7/7/00 wreck at Crescent, CO Click here to return to the index.
On July 7, 2000, several cars from westbound empty coal train CMSEY derailed west of Crescent, CO. This happened in a pretty bad location: a curved, high fill at the entrance of Tunnel 19. Anyways, the pictures below speak for themselves. The DEGX hoppers were newer aluminum cars owned by Mississippi Power.

I was able to photograph the wrecked cars the following day after the track had been repaired and the line was re-opened.

Picture Location Date Description / Notes
west of Crescent 7/16/00 On my second visit to the site a week later, I was able to get this dramatic shot of the wrecked hoppers viewed through the woods (looking south).
west of Crescent 7/8/00 Our first look at the wreckage as we approach from the north.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 DEGX 88412 on its side. Notice the wheels buried in the soil to the right of the tracks!!! Although the rail has been repaired, the ties still show the damage from the wheelsets.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 Another view of DEGX 88412. Note the damage done to the tree adjacent to it. (That tree is still scarred to this day!)
west of Crescent 7/8/00 Wheels and carbodies lay in piles trackside.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 DEGX 94171 lies down the hillside next to the tracks.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 View trackside looking east from Tunnel 19.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 Here's a view looking east from the hillside adjacent to Tunnel 19.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 Several of the wrecked DEGX cars were piled up with bulldozers to facilitate speedy track repairs.
west of Crescent 7/8/00 Ever wonder how big a train wheel is? My roommate poses next to a pile of damaged wheelsets.
