"Tunnel 30 Wreck" clean-up, February 2006 Click here to return to the index.
In January, 2006 approximately 15 coal gondolas derailed inside Tunnel 30 on an eastbound coal train. The rumored cause was a broken rail, but I haven't seen any "official" report to confirm that. This derailment was particularly nasty because it happened in a difficult area (limited access) not to mention the fact that several cars got stuck inside the tunnel. The wrecked cars were hauled to either Rollinsville or Pinecliffe, which is where I was able to photograph them. A couple of the aluminum-bodied cars were already cut-up, and I assume the rest will be cut-up as well. Although at least one NS-owned steel-bodied car was loaded onto a flatcar for transport.
