HERZOG 173 CLEAN-UP TRAIN photos Click here to return to the index.
There is a brand new self-propelled Herzog clean-up train roaming the Moffat Route. This one is even more interesting than the HZGX 164/165 train. This one has its own locomotive (HZGX 173) built in 2006 by RELCO. It appears to be built on a GP7 frame with a full cowl body added. Behind the locomotive is a 6-unit set (yes, 6 units, not 5) of old stack cars converted to gondolas. At the very end is a crane flatcar also equipped with a control cab. Check out the photos below!

Pinecliffe 11/24/06 Here is an overall view of the HZGX 173 train. The locomotive is numbered 173. The trailing cars are numbered 1730 A, G, F, E, D, C, B.
Pinecliffe 11/24/06 Side view of HZGX 173. The builder's plate calls this locomotive a RELCO 1500A.
Pinecliffe 11/24/06 Front view of HZGX 173. The body work is very interesting and definitely unique.
Pinecliffe 11/24/06 Builder's plate on HZGX 173. Built 8-2006 by RELCO.
Pinecliffe 11/24/06 This is the A-unit of the six-unit gondola set. The builder's plate on this unit says built 7-06 by Ebenezer Railcar; however it appears to be a former double stack car. Note it appears to be permanently coupled to the locomotive.
Pinecliffe 11/24/06 This is the last car in the train.  It is a flatcar with an articulated connection to the 6-unit set of gondolas. It has a control cab for push-pull operation.
