HERZOG 164/165 CLEAN-UP TRAIN photos Click here to return to the index.
I know these aren't the most "scenic" photos out there, but this train is just too cool to be neglected on this web page. It's been roaming the Moffat Route for the past couple months. Its job is to clean-up old ties and rail debris from along the tracks. It consists of two cars - HZGX 164 and 165. HZGX 164 is the crane support car - it carries the on-board crane when the train is not in use. HZGX 165 is a former double-stack car converted to a gondola. The floors have been filled in, and a set of rails runs along the top sills of the car, thereby allowing the crane to sit on top and scoop debris into the wells. The train is self-propelled. Check out the photos below!

Picture Location Date Description / Notes
Rocky Flats 6/10/01 HZGX 164 is the crane support car. It is a heavily modified 53' flatcar, and it carries a large Komatsu crane that runs on rails down the length of the train.
Plainview 6/17/01 Here's another shot of 164.
Rocky Flats 6/10/01 Here's the 5-unit articulated gondola. It's a rebuilt Thrall Lo-Pac 2000 double-stack car. The bottoms have been filled in; brake equipment relocated; and a set of rails placed along the top sills.
Plainview 6/17/01 Another shot of 165, viewed from unit B. The train has a small operator's cab on each end, but it is not self-propelled.
Plainview 6/17/01 Nice side shot of the B-unit. The stack car heritage is quite apparent!
Plainview 6/17/01 Note how the bottoms have been filled in with sheet metal to allow this car to be used as a 5-unit gondola!
Plainview 6/17/01 Another view of the interior, this time of unit C.
Plainview 6/17/01 Close-up of the drawbar connecting HZGX 164 and 165. Also note the rails for the crane which crossover between the cars.
